Hit-And-Run Kills Aurora School Worker
Posted on January 30, 2013 in Personal Injury
On January 21, outside a psychiatric residential treatment center in Aurora, a counselor for the center was killed. Theresa Burns, the victim, was walking with one of the students that she had been counseling when tragedy struck. The 18 year old, who had been counseled by Burns, walked onto the street and sat down. Burns and other staff members rushed to get her off the road when a car hit Burns and killed her. Another staff member was also hit and injured. The incident took place around 5:30 pm, according to police. Burns was pronounced dead at 6 pm. Authorities do not believe that the driver was driving illegally when he hit Burns and the fellow staff member. Two other staff members had also tried to help but were not injured; neither was the 18-year-old woman.
The driver of the car fled the scene, and left his 1997 Geo Metro behind on Church Road in Aurora. Police believe that they know the driver's identity but are unable to locate him. Authorities from Northern Illinois Academy, where the incident took place, say that they are going to review their current policies since this occurrence. The Northern Illinois Academy is a school for young people with mental health issues.
