Illinois Traffic Fatalities on the Decline

According to a news article recently published by the chtribune, a new study was released which found that Illinois traffic fatalities have been on the decline in the state of Illinois over the past several years. More specifically, the findings show that crash-related deaths have decreased 30 percent from the year 2005 to 2012 in the state. This trend echoes one seen across the nation, with a 23 percent decline in traffic fatalities across the United States in the same time span.

Previously, the numbers showed a trend in the opposite direction. Statistics from the 1990s to 2005 showed an increase in traffic fatalities. The noticeable drop in numbers came after the year 2005.

Why the Decrease?

Some suggest that the decreased crash fatality trend can be attributed to the fact that many vehicles are now safer than they were in the past. This enables people to survive accidents that would have been deadly just 20 or so years ago. Factors that have improved with technology, such as front crash prevention systems and lane assist features, are helping to improve road safety. But the main characteristic of modern cars that improves their safety on the road is that they are simply better built.

Many automakers are improving the quality of the vehicles they produce as a result of crash testing. Crash testing performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the IIHS has become more involved and rigorous. As a result, many believe auto companies are manufacturing cars with better crush zones that more effectively distribute energy.

In addition, safety regulations that have been put into effect are likely also contributing to safer roads. Not only has the 1960s mandate on wearing seat belts reduced the risk of injuries in case of an accident by 50 percent, but more recent regulations have also played a role in vehicle road safety. Beginning in 2012, all vehicles are mandated to have electronic stability control, which is based on antilock brakes and consistently monitors how a vehicle responds to driver steering and acceleration. It is meant to take over in case a driver loses control by keeping the vehicle on the path intended by the position of the steering wheel. Enforcement of these and other traffic regulations also contributes to safer roads.
