A 77-year-old school bus driver lost control of an empty school bus in Niles on January 29 causing multiple crashes and injuring several people. According to police, Elaine Delaney suffered an unknown medical problem and lost the control of her vehicle, only minutes before she was supposed to pick up children from a nearby school. Five people, including the woman driving the bus, were sent to hospitals to be treated. No one suffered life-threatening injuries in the series of accidents. Delaney was cited with several traffic violations, for example, driving in the wrong lane, disobeying a traffic control signal and driving too fast for conditions. She may lose her school bus permit for three years and her driver's license for a year. Delaney has been a bus driver for over 15 years and had a nearly perfect work record before the accident. In addition, drivers are examined once a year by a doctor for any medical conditions that might impair driving ability.
