Move-Over Accidents Addressed by Early Alert System | IL

Posted on October 14,2024 in Personal Injury

Naperville Personal Injury LawyerGoogle Public Sector has partnered with the Illinois State Police (ISP) to make it one of the first law enforcement agencies to provide "move-over" crash notifications in Google Maps and Waze. This technology aims to reduce the number of auto collisions caused by drivers who fail to see flashing emergency lights or a disabled driver and do not move out of the way. The technology offers a real-time, GPS-based alert that informs drivers of ISP traffic activity in their area and urges them to move over and slow down.

Drivers are alerted to crashes, traffic stops, motorist assists, and even debris in the roadway. These alerts, along with a police officer’s GPS coordinates, are fed to Google Cloud, where they are "transformed" and sent to Waze. As a driver approaches the GPS location, he or she will receive a police officer, crash, or disabled vehicle icon on the map screen.

In the coming weeks, similar icons will appear on Google Maps.  While the warning system was initially created to protect state troopers, it also protects drivers. Since 2019, two ISP troopers have lost their lives, nine were seriously injured, and 51 others received mild to moderate injuries in move over crashes.

The hope for this new technology is that it will reduce the number of car accidents on Illinois highways. If you are the victim of a car accident caused by the negligence of another driver, including a police officer, it is important that you speak to a knowledgeable Lombard, IL personal injury attorney from Mevorah & Giglio Law Offices.

What Are the Most Common Types of Illinois Car Accidents?

Rear-end collisions are by far the most common type of car accident, accounting for more than 40 percent of the nation's car collisions. They usually occur in heavy, stop-and-go traffic and are often caused by distractions or inattention. While many rear-end collisions ensue at lower speeds, they can nonetheless leave those involved in the crash with serious injuries.

Head-on collisions are the deadliest type of auto accident and typically take place in rural areas. A head-on accident usually occurs when one vehicle crosses over the center line into oncoming traffic or when a person drives the wrong way on a one-way street. Other types of auto accidents include side-impact collisions, also known as "T-bone" accidents, and sideswipe accidents. T-bone accidents often happen at intersections, while sideswipe accidents are more likely to occur on heavily traveled highways and freeways.

What Damages Could You Receive Following an Illinois Car Accident?

If you are the victim of a car accident caused by another driver’s negligence, you may be entitled to one or more of the following damages:

  • Medical expenses: Most auto accident claims cover medical costs related to your injuries from the accident.

  • Lost wages: You can recover wages lost due to your injury, including future wages if your injuries affect your ability to work.

  • Non-economic damages: Compensation for pain and suffering is available, though these damages can be harder to prove due to their subjective nature.
