Tips for Parents Going Through a Divorce

Posted on February 13,2018 in Family Law

Illinois divorce lawyer=If you are going through a divorce, you should make sure your children are at the top of your priority list. After all, this is a time where your children may feel anxious and confused and will need to be cared for and reassured more than ever before. Here are five tips for parenting when going through a divorce:

1. Avoid Talking About Your Soon to Be Ex in Front of Your Children.

Although it is easier said than done, you should avoid talking about your soon to be ex in front of your children. If you are experiencing feelings of anger or betrayal, you can vent to a trustworthy sibling, friend, or therapist. Your children do not need to know about your emotions during this difficult time.

2. Ensure Your Children Are Not Messengers.

If you do not want to contact your ex, you may be tempted to ask your children to become the messengers. They may feel stressed and put into an uncomfortable situation if you do so. If you do not want to speak to your ex in person or even call them, you can communicate via text or email.

3. Do Not Give Your Children Everything Because of Guilt.

Sometimes, divorcing parents feel bad about the situation they have caused and give their children everything as a result. Rather than spoiling them with toys and gadgets, you should constantly reassure them that everything is going to be okay and encourage them to be open about their feelings and concerns.

4. Participate in Fun Activities with Your Children.

It can be easy to forget how to have fun while you are going through a divorce. However, participating in fun activities is important because it will get your mind off your divorce and allow your children to feel more connected to you. You can see a movie with your children, visit a museum, or even travel to a nearby town for a weekend getaway.

5. Take Care of Yourself.

You cannot be a good parent if you disregard your personal needs during the divorce process. Therefore, you should be sure you are eating healthy, exercising regularly, getting plenty of sleep, and making time to relax and create happy memories with loved ones.
