What to do When you Have Been in a Car Accident
Posted on April 16, 2013 in Personal Injury
Once a teen gets their drivers license, all they can think about is going out and getting around. Maybe even what kind of vehicle they hope to drive. They have been warned about accidents but it could never happen to them... right? Regardless, know
what to do if an accident were to occur so you or a new driver will be prepared.
Being prepared for an accident covers many angles. First, pull over to the side of the road to prevent more accidents. Have the right equipment in your car and trunk such as emergency flares, warning triangles or a set of cones. Carry a pen/pencil and information with important medical information and emergency contacts. This is just the basics – more can be left in your car if you feel the need.
Once you have been in an
auto accident there are steps you must take immediately after the accident's occurrence. After the accident stay calm and take deep breaths to make sure you can stay clearheaded. Check for injuries and if you need to, contact 911; however, if the accident is not serious try to move vehicles to a safe place where traffic is farther away. Use the equipment you have in your car like cones, triangles and flares as well as hazard lights. Regardless of how small or big of an accident, contact the police and call your insurance agent.
A variety of tips can help you out while remaining polite and not admitting any fault regardless if you think it is your fault. You might be asked to sign things but only do so for police or your insurance agent as well as only talk to those two parties regarding the accident and no one else. Do not pass on information to anyone else. Take notes about the accident such as damages, witnesses and their information and even the information on the driver if they are not the registered owner.
