For shorter marriages, this may be an approximate 50/50 division of assets (such as pensions, life insurance, and investments). In longer marriages or situations where one spouse earned significantly more than the other, the division may favor the spouse with less earning potential.

What to Expect with Spousal Maintenance

Most people are familiar with alimony, which is referred to in Illinois as spousal maintenance. If necessary, one spouse may be required to support the other by making ongoing payments after the dissolution of the marriage. In Illinois, there is a general formula that may determine how much a spouse will pay in maintenance:
