Paternity in Illinois
When a child is born, it is obvious who the mother is because she gives birth. The father, however, could be unknown, depending on the sexual partners that the mother had around the time of conception.
If a single woman is raising a child and a man claims to be the father, he must prove it before anything can be official. Both biological parents must sign the correct forms to make the fatherhood legal. If, when the child is born, the biological parents are not available to sign the forms, the woman’s husband, if available, usually signs the Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity form and a Denial of Paternity form is also completed.
If the biological father is missing, there are many forms to complete to fill the void of a father for the child. Depending on the relationship of the parents, different forms, identification and fees are required for this process.
If the parents were married before the child was born and remained married after the birth, the paternity is the simplest, however, every disconnect within the family makes it more complicated. If the parents are not married until after the birth, paternity must be made legal, along with if the parents are never married. It may also be affected if the parents are divorced before the child is born.

Divorce and Facebook
Social media has become a huge part of our everyday lives, Facebook being just one of its many outlets. But can these sites that let us connect faster with others hurt our marriages? A recent article says yes.
According to the Wall Street Journal’s blog Smart Money, Facebook has been discovered as causing many divorces around the world as well as providing evidence during divorce hearings.
A United Kingdom-based legal firm reported that more than a third of divorce filings contained the word “Facebook,” according to a study they recently conducted.
Here at home, over 80% of divorce attorneys say they’ve noticed an increase in the number of cases using social networking, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
A divorce attorney in Connecticut reported to Smart Money that out of the 15 cases he handles per year in which computer history, texts, and emails are used as evidence, 60% involve Facebook specifically.
K. Jason Kraksy, author of “Facebook and Your Marriage”, says that “Affairs happen with a lightning speed on Facebook.”
Teen Driving Safety
Although parenting may be tricky when kids are young with spanking, timeouts, and groundings, it only gets more complicated when the kids turn into teenagers, then go to high school and get their drivers licenses. It is more important at that point more than ever for parents to teach their kids how to be responsible and safe. Even before kids are old enough to get behind the wheel, it is important for parents to model good driving behaviors, which will influence the kids when they do have control of a car. In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association suggests that parents spell out the rules of the road for their teens when they are getting ready to take the wheel. Suggested rules from the NHSTA include: No Alcohol- Even though drivers age 15-20 cannot legally buy or possess alcohol, they have a much higher risk of being involved in a traffic accident caused by alcohol than older adults. The NHTSA reported that about 25 percent of teenage drivers killed in crashes in the last 5 years involved underage drivers with a BAC of 0.01 or higher.

Dividing Assets During Divorce
As if the emotional and familial fall-out from divorce wasn’t enough, there’s also the issue of what to do with all your things when you decide to split. For a couple that’s been together for several years, this can be a complicated process. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “first marriages that end in divorce last about 8 years, on average.” This is plenty of time to accumulate enough stuff to make the thought of ever having to divide it all rather daunting. And it’s not just the actual possessions in your home that will have to be considered—dividing assets includes “houses, rental property, retirement and pension plans, stock options, restricted stock, deferred compensation, brokerage accounts, closely-held businesses, professional practices and licenses, etc.,” according to the Huffington Post. If your divorce isn’t amiable—which, let’s face it, they rarely are—this can be an even more complicated process.
